W.S.U.D. aims to mange stormwater by minimising the extent of impervious surfaces and trapping pollution at either the site level or on a regional basis. W.S.U.D. provides a framework for incorporating porous paving into urban and residential design.
.
Its benefits not only embrace stormwater management and pollution control but include economical advantages by minimising the costs of surface drainage works, reducing the demands on stormwater usage and optimising land use. Rockpave porous paving has any number of applictions when using Water Sensitive Urban Design Principles.

Subdivision nails green award
The creation of an outstanding eco-subdivision by the Ashburton District Council has been justifiably recognised with a national environment award. Ashburton District Council won the prestigious Household Sustainability Award at the 2009 Green Ribbon Awards ceremony in Wellington . The council was also the highly commended entry into the urban sustainability category. The award was presented by the Hon. Nick Smith , Minister for the Environment. The council won the award for its Geoff Gearing Drive eco-subdivision. The houses in the sub-division are built to promote energy efficiency using concrete floors, double glazing, drainage systems, increased insulation and on site storm water catchment facilities for the purposes of garden irrigation.
The impact of water run off through the entire sub-division is minimised through the unique design of the curb and channeling using RockpaveÔ as a permeable paving and drainage strip which minimises the amount of water run off into the stormwater system. Thus minimising the amount of run off flowing into the surrounding water courses. RockpaveÔ was selected by the Council because of its flexibility of design, its outstanding ability to allow large volumes of water to pass through the 'solid' curbing and its ability to utilise the local Ashburton river stone to enhance the 'local' flavour of the project.
